It's with heavy hearts that I have to confirm rumors that Hipster Home will be relocating our store to Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia. In mid-September Hipster Home will open our doors in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania at 8236 Germantown Avenue directly across the street from the Chestnut Hill Hotel at the bottom of the hill but until then we will remain open at our current location. This new space is currently occupied by a friend and mentor store of ours called Host who will be relocating to a larger space in Chestnut Hill. This has been a long painstaking decision and it doesn't come easy to move our store.

Many of you who know us personally know that we also live in Phoenixville and we absolutely love our town. Those facts have not changed and will not change. Phoenxiville is an awesome town and we have seen remarkable progress and have become a true destination point so we should all be proud of our downtown. The fact of the matter is that Phoenixville has become a small restaurant district (which is a good thing) but retail shopping, which I liken to hunting, is a completely different animal then restaurant strolling and for us to accomplish our goals we need to be in a competitive retail district.

Hipster Home has made tremendous strides in 3 years on Bridge Street and the residents of this town have had a huge part in that growth. Phoenixville has helped us get to our current status of minor success and now we need to take the next steps to further grow our business into a competitive retail store on a larger stage. If we want to stay viable then we need to expand our client base and move into a more retail centric area. We feel Chestnut Hill and the proximity to downtown Philly gives us this opportunity.

Our hearts will always be here in Phoenixville. Our foundation was laid here in Phoenixville. Our first steps were here in Phoenixville. Our small successes were right here in downtown Phoenixville. This is our home (and our comfort zone) but sometimes you need to push off the island to discover new worlds. Please be proud of the successes we have all created in our humble little store. We need everyone to continue to support Hipster Home. We still need you now more then ever.

Skateboard Subculture Meets High End Design

I love when subculture meets high culture. The clash of the two diametrically opposed worlds creates a unique energy. In this case the chaotic skateboard subculture meets the sleek world of modern design. Deckstools uses broken skateboard decks and repurpose them into furniture that is urban, artistic, edgy and functional. Every piece is made from broken or trashed skateboard decks that are donated or found and then given a new life in a completely different world. This is reincarnation at its best.

It's long been known in the skateboard world that the imagery on skateboard decks is nothing short of urban art. It's graffiti on bent plywood. Like an Eames Chair with graphic art printed all over it. I love the energy the Deckstools create with the urban punk graphics and the heavy use scratches like scars on an old warrior (evidence of a former life) juxtaposed against the straight lines and geometry needed to make them a functional piece of furniture. Hell, they even use the trucks as a support system to tie the legs together and the entire skateboard is recycled. Seriously, what's not to love? It's art, youth subculture and architecture all rolled into one to create high design. We are very excited about the Deckstool line and we know you'll love them and at only a few hundred dollars it's a great way to add this versatile, graphic piece to your design mix.

Eames Lounge Chair

The Eames Lounge Chair represents the pinnacle of modern design. Originally designed in 1956 as a birthday present for the hollywood director Billy Wilder it since has reached iconic status and now sits in its permanent home at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in NYC.

Over the past year we have had the pleasure of being caretakers to an original Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman in our store (consignment). Since that time I have grown attached to it's quite beauty and strength. Like a beautiful painting it draws people of all ages to it's soft seat. Don't be fooled by it's simplicity and grace. This piece commands attention. No one can walk by this chair without commenting on its beauty . Even children who have never heard of Eames fall to its powers.

Sometimes when you live with a piece you tend to take it for granted and forget how special it is. The Eames Lounge never dulls. Everyday I walked into my store I marveled at its design. Everyday I found another reason to look & love it even more. I have to be honest, when some of my customers would visit the store and sit on my chair I would get a rush of overprotectiveness like a parent with a child.

Now, since it sold, letting it go will be bittersweet. I am glad to see it go to owners that will respect its heritage and honor its name. As collectors of classic modern furniture they know of it worth and will take care of the chair like one of their own children. If I ever go to visit their house I know I will still refer to it as my Eames Lounge Chair. It will never leave me and I can only hope to one day afford a piece of my own.

The irony of owning a modern furniture store is that sometimes you're lucky or unlucky enough to offer pieces you cannot afford. One day, when the store becomes more successful, I will make the endeavor to posses my own Eames Lounge Chair. It will be my Porsche. It will be my Ferrari. It will be my mistress.

Thanks Eric for sending this great photograph of his newly purchased large Geneva Sound System in walnut. Of course he placed it next to another one of his prized possessions, his original Heritage H-555 Gibson guitar that was made at the original Kalamazoo Michigan plant. Eric also purchased a small Geneva Sound unit in black for his bedroom. I can't imagine anything better than having a small Geneva with an iPhone docked right to it sitting in your bedroom as it charges playing your favorite tunes (it'll even accept phone calls while it's docked and playing turning off the music so you can accept the phone call.............. WOW!). And all this while not losing an ounce of sound thanks to the class D amplifiers and the handmade box that projects the tremendous sound.

Pre-war twins sit cheek-to-jowl with Victorians and new condos in a borough where CEOs and construction workers all shop at the same organic grocery. The small but flourishing downtown and a recent flood of young people up the cool factor, too.

Schools: High-ranking Phoenixville Area High School has a 15:1 student-teacher ratio.

Commute to Philly: 40 minutes by car; 20-minute drive to the Villanova train station, then 25 minutes on the R5.

Things you get: Housing from $150,000 to $600,000-plus; parks galore, including neighboring Valley Forge; 32 places of worship; Civic Center family nights; neighborhood hangs (Pickering Creek Inn, Iron Hill Brewery … ).

Things you don’t: A train stop. Every township along the 422 corridor wants a line, but it hasn’t happened yet. Also, good Chinese food.

Since we're always (and I mean always) in the store we rarely get to see our pieces at their final destination point. So you can understand that we were pretty excited when our friend Chris sent us this picture of the James Lounge Convertible Sofa and the Chicago 8 Shelving Unit in his loft at the Byrne Building Lofts. Our store is now proud to represent American Pop Artist John Stango to our offerings at Hipster Home. John Stango's lifelong passion began to take form during his academic tenure at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. Here he received the education behind his true devotion and dedication to art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Graphic Design. Upon graduation, Stango cultivated his creativity working as a visual merchandiser and display artist for Macy's and Bloomingdale's department stores.

Craving a more artistic field, Stango began creating original T-shirt designs in 1985 at his studio in South West Philadelphia. Finding a great deal of success in this venture, Stango's hand silk-screened designer shirts were being featured in the same department stores he once worked. Macy's, Wanamaker's, and Fiorucci featured his high-fashion, one-of-a-kind T-shirts. Continuing to build a reputation as one of the most innovative artists in the region, Stango turned to painting full time. The earliest of Stango's Pop paintings were initially featured as backdrops for window displays at several Philadelphia department stores. Eventually, Stango began showing in area galleries as his technique became refined with his use of popular images epitomizing glamour and twisted Pop icons. As an emerging American Pop artist, Stango's work is represented in galleries from New York to California, Sweden to Japan, attracting patrons from a widely diverse demographic.

Since my last article sought to help those frightened by the “great white wall,” I decided to dedicate this month’s decor dish to the fearless -- Those that laugh in the face of a naked wall and bite back with skull sconces or a faux deer head.... why? Perhaps the better question is why not?

Giving traditional decorating a shot in the arm, many young women are having fun incorporating pieces that make a bold statement and get noticed. While this style used to have somewhat of a cult following, it has since gone mainstream; and with many more demanding a little hardcore in their decor, stores are stepping up. This is good news for those who are tired of searching high and low for something unique, and are sick of seeing the same pink fuzzy religious figurines c/o today’s hippest chain stores.

So where can you find the edge you’re looking for? As everyone who knows me can attest to, I am a huge fan of vintage & thrift stores and it is a no-brainer that you can find super-cool, one of a kind pieces if you just take the time to look. However, if you’re more of an instant gratification gal, some contemporary home decor boutiques have upped the ante and can give you the bold look you want as well as peace of mind knowing that your entire Facebook network won’t have the exact same thing. One of my favorite finds for edgy, chic decor is Hipster Home, located in downtown Phoenixville, PA.

In the heart of this charming little town lies a pulse-quickening destination for those who want to give their pad a hip makeover, or simply add some unexpected touches to surroundings that are barely noticeable anymore. From goth-chic glassware to retro-inspired furniture and everything in between, this store has got it’s decor-forward customers at heart and refuses to disappoint. Hipster Home has been voted "Best Housewares Store in Philadelphia" for 2008 by our customers and Fox 29 News. We are now the proud owners of this title for 2 years in a row since winning in 2007 (our first year in business). We need to thank our loyal customers for a great 1st year and an even better start to our second year.

We promised to bring "you" our customers some of the newest and best home furnishings in the industry and we feel we accomplished our goal. We promise to continue offering the same contemporary and rustic pieces that separates us from our competition. Established in the summer of June 2007: Hipster Home is a contemporary & organic home furnishings store for people with a unique interpretation of their living style not offered at larger retailers. Our goal is to offer unique, fashionable product that will stand the test of time both in fashion and durability. We are against "throwawayism" that is so prevalent in our society today. The idea that companies manufacture product that is meant to be thrown away, even if it is "green", is something we're not interested in pursuing. We prefer to offer product that is meant to last both to our fashion sensibilities and our demand for durable product. Of course we do offer "green" products but not with intent to throw it away. Hence: we are against "throwawayism" - a catch word that will be a constant theme at Hipster Home. We are offering this blog to keep you up to date on our progress and our product lines. We also want to include you into our successes and failures by listening to your suggestions on the store, our layout, merchandising, product, events, employees and direction.
